Departmental OSOTF, OTSS and Other Endowed Awards

The following is a list of fellowship endowed by generous alumni and friends of DNS. No application is required. The funds are allocated to the primary faculty members and will be considered as part of the guaranteed graduate student stipend.

Michael C. Archer Research Excellence Award

To be awarded to undergraduate or graduate student conducting research with a faculty member in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, who first-authored a research article in the preceding year.

Mary Raymond Brown Memorial Scholarship in Nutritional Sciences

Donor: Estate of Genevra Richards.

To be awarded on the basis of academic excellence.

Edith Cosens Endowment Fund

Donor: Estate of Edith Cosens.

To be awarded to graduate students in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Medicine on the basis of academic excellence to support and promote the study of and the dissemination of information on community nutrition

Dairy Farmers of Canada Graduate Student Fellowships (OSOTF)

Donor: Dairy Farmers of Canada.

To be awarded to Faculty of Medicine graduate students on the basis of financial need who are studying within the field of nutrition and osteoporosis.

Household Science & Nutritional Sciences Alumni Graduate Scholarship (OSOTF)

Donor: Household Science and Nutritional Sciences Alumni.

To be awarded to graduate students in the Faculty of Medicine on the basis of financial need who are studying within the field of nutritional sciences.

Ina Kniep Scholarship

Donor: Estate of Ina Margaret Kniep.

To be awarded to graduate students in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, on the basis of academic excellence. Preference will be given to graduate students who are members of the Canadian Dietetic Association and who are pursuing graduate studies in community nutrition.

Annie L. Laird Fellowship in Food Sciences

The recipient must be a graduate of the University of Toronto, registered in the School of Graduate Studies and pursuing studies in the area of nutrition in the Department of Nutrition and Food Science.

Lylla Doreen Lewis Scholarship

Donor: Estate of Lylla Doreen Lewis.

To be awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Medicine on the basis of academic excellence.

Betty Isobel MacKay Award

Donor: Estate of Betty Isobel MacKay

The award will be used to supplement the annual stipend of a licensed health professional graduate, who is pursiong an MSc or PhD in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Toronto. The candidate will be selected each year at the discretion of the Chair of the Department of Nutritional Sciences.

Nora Martin Fellowship in Nutritional Sciences (OTSS)

Donor: Nora Martin

To be awarded to one or more graduate students in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Medicine on the basis of financial need. Preference will be given to students who:

  1. Are of high academic standing and have demonstrated leadership ability through their extra-curricular activities.
  2. Have a focus of study in nutrition or food-related research and health and/or disease.

In the absence of an eligible candidate, preference will be given to a student in financial need with academic merit.

Department of Nutritional Sciences Graduate Student Fellowship (OSOTF)

Donor: Various industry members of the Program in Food Safety.

To be awarded to Faculty of Medicine graduate students on the basis of financial need who are studying within the field of nutritional sciences and food safety.

Professor Lilian U. Thompson Graduate Student Award

Donor: Faculty, friends and other members of the department.

To be awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Nutritional Sciences for best seminar presentation for the academic year.

Marjorie Van Veen Graduate Scholarship in Human Nutrition

Donor: Estate of Marjorie Van Veen.

To be awarded to graduate students in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Medicine. Preference will be given to students doing graduate research or training in human nutrition.

Sharon Zeiler Nutrition Award

Donor: Ms. Sharon Zeiler.

To be awarded to a full time graduate student in the Faculty of Medicine's Department of Nutritional Sciences. The recipients’ work will have a broad focus in in the area of nutrition, but with an emphasis on prevention.

Loblaw Food as Medicine Graduate Award

Donor: Loblaw Companies Limited (LCL)

To support graduate students registered in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, in the Faculty of Medicine which will be administered and awarded in accordance with University policies and procedures. These awards will focus on the impact of current food fortification practices or extending fortification to other nutrients or foods on the nutritional status of Canadians. Preference will be given to projects that investigate nutrients that are consumed in suboptimal or elevated amounts in the population or in vulnerable subgroups. Another focus may be the impact of adding probiotics and prebiotics (and/or symbiotics) to foods on the prevention or treatment of disease.

Faculty of Food Sciences Class of ’69 Nutritional Sciences Award

Donor: Multiple Class Giving

To be awarded to one or more graduate students in the Department of Nutritional Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine on the basis of financial need. Preference will be given to students who:

  1. Are of high academic standing and have demonstrated participation in extra-curricular activities such volunteering, employment, community activism, arts, music or sport
  2. Have a focus of study in nutrition or food-related research and health and/or disease

PPEF-Graduate Scholarships in the Program in Food Safety, Nutrition and Regulatory Affairs

To be awarded to a graduate student (international or domestic) enrolled in a full-time PhD program in public health research that is relevant to food regulations and policy in the Department of Nutritional Sciences.
