M.Sc. & Ph.D Degree Program – Program Objectives

The aim of the graduate research degree programs (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) is to develop the student's abilities to conceptualize research problems in the area of human nutrition, synthesize ideas and approaches in the research problem, analyze and interpret data, transmit his or her findings to peers, and expand his or her knowledge in, and perspective of, the field of human nutrition. Thus, major emphasis is placed on the research project and thesis (see list of students and theses).

The Combined Master of Science (MSc)-Dietetic Internship Program is a joint program of Hospital for Sick Children and the University of Toronto, Department of Nutritional Sciences. The goal of this program is to train individuals to become dietetic practitioners with advanced research skills. The Combined MSc-Internship program is based on the existing Graduate Dietetic. Internship program offered at Hospital for Sick Children and the MSc program offered by the Department of Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. The Master of Public Health specializing in Community Nutrition (MPH) shares many of these aims but has a more specific purpose as well. The objective of the MPH-Community Nutrition is the development of knowledge and skills required to assess nutritional needs of the community, and to design, implement and evaluate community nutrition programs. The specialization is intended to provide professional preparation for the student with specific interest in a career as a public health or community nutrition consultant with government, large community organizations or industry. As a result, major emphasis is placed on course work, practica and self-learning. The program and its requirements are described in a separate section.

The Master Public Health Community Nutrition specialization Advanced Standing Option is designed for experienced nutrition professionals who wish to enhance their understanding of public health theory and practice. The program prepares working nutrition professionals to move into or advance in the field of public health. The program’s flexible structure delivered through a variety of modular, workplace and on-line educational formats enables students to meet existing professional and personal commitments while pursuing an advanced degree.

Enrolment in graduate programs is generally about 60-70 students in M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs and about 25 students in the MPH-Community Nutrition program. Admission rates vary from year to year depending upon availability of supervisors but are generally about 15-20 students in the M.Sc./Ph.D. streams and about 12 in the MPH-Community Nutrition stream. Enrolment is limited and competitive in all programs.
