Dr. Mary L’Abbé inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame

Dr. Mary R. L’Abbé, one of Canada’s most influential public health nutrition experts and a Professor Emeritus in the University of Toronto’s Department of Nutritional Sciences, has been inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame (CMHF) in recognition of her transformative contributions to nutrition policy, food regulation, and chronic disease prevention in Canada and around the world.

For decades, L’Abbé has been at the forefront of efforts to improve the health of Canadians through evidence-based nutrition policy. Her work has helped shape some of the country’s most significant public health measures, including the implementation of mandatory Nutrition Facts tables, initiatives to reduce dietary sodium, the elimination of industrial trans fats from the food supply, and stronger food labelling regulations. These policies are now regarded as global benchmarks for advancing public health through nutrition.

Dr. L’Abbé’s induction into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame is a fitting recognition of a career dedicated to improving the health of populations through science, policy, and advocacy. Her work has empowered consumers, informed governments, and influenced nutrition policy around the world.”

Before joining the University of Toronto, L’Abbé spent more than 30 years at Health Canada, where she served as Director of the Bureau of Nutritional Sciences. In that role, she led research, surveillance, and regulatory initiatives aimed at ensuring the quality and safety of Canada’s food supply.

Among her most notable achievements is the creation of the Food Label Information and Price (FLIP) database, Canada’s most comprehensive food composition database. Established in 2010, FLIP has tracked nutrition information for more than 200,000 packaged and restaurant food products and is now used by researchers, policymakers, and public health organizations in nearly 20 countries.

L’Abbé has also played a leading role on the international stage. She founded the WHO Collaborating Centre on Nutrition Policy for Chronic Disease Prevention and has advised organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Codex Alimentarius, Health Canada, and the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Her expertise has helped inform global recommendations on sugars, sodium, fats, carbohydrates, and other key nutrition issues.

The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame highlighted L’Abbé’s enduring impact on public health, noting that her research and leadership have directly influenced the daily health of Canadians and people worldwide. Through her advocacy for clearer nutrition information and healthier food environments, she has helped shift attention from treating chronic diseases to preventing them in the first place.

Reflecting her lifelong commitment to prevention, L’Abbé has emphasized the importance of creating healthier food environments, stating:“To stem Canada’s epidemic of chronic disease, we must shift our focus from treatment to prevention.”

Her induction into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame celebrates not only a distinguished career of scientific excellence but also a lasting legacy of public service that continues to shape healthier food systems and empower healthier choices for generations to come.
