About Dr. Jonathon Maguire

Professor Maguire holds the Lawson Chair in Patient Engagement in Child Nutrition at U of T, through which he conducts patient-oriented research — an approach in which families and children provide input throughout the research process, including identifying questions they want answered, how they would like them answered and which results they are most likely to use in  day-to-day life.

Prof. Maguire is a staff pediatrician in the Department of Pediatrics at St. Michael’s Hospital, with an clinical practice focussed on urban child nutrition. His research is focused on clinical trials which aim to improve the nutrition and health of urban children. He co-leads TARGet Kids!, the largest primary care research network for children in Canada.

Prof. Maguire has received several awards including the Samuel J. Fomon Young Physician Award from the American Society of Nutrition, the Canadian Paediatric Society Young Investigator Award, a Canadian Institutes of Health Research New Investigator Award,  an Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation Early Researcher Award, an American Academy of Pediatrics Special Achievement award and holds a CIHR/SPOR Chair in Innovative Clinical Trials.


Research Synopsis

Dr. Maguire’s research interests focus on clinical trials involving nutrition and development in young children, as well as the creation of tools to facilitate evidence informed child health practice. As a CIHR/SPOR Innovative Clinical Trials Mentorship Chair and CIHR Foundation Grant Awardee, Dr. Maguire’s program of research has focused on the prevention of childhood illness. His leadership roles include co-lead of TARGet Kids!, and Steering Committee Chair of the Canadian Pediatric Surveillance Program (CPSP). Dr. Maguire has created a large practice-based research network (TARGet Kids!), engaged key decision makers including parent groups, clinicians and policy makers and am a leader in early childhood prevention research receiving global media attention and invitations for academic presentations at multiple universities.
