Professor Catherine Birken
Professor Catherine Birken has been named the inaugural recipient of the Edwin S.H. Leong Chair in Child Health Intervention. She is a general paediatrician in the division of Paediatric Medicine at The Hospital for Sick Children, a Professor in the Departments of Paediatrics and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Toronto, a researcher in the Joannah & Brian Lawson Centre for Child Nutrition and a Senior Scientist in Child Health Evaluative Sciences at the Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute. Her research focuses on the promotion of healthy, growth development and well-being in young children, including preventing childhood obesity, and she co-leads TARGet Kids!, a primary care practice-based research network to advance child health preventative research.
The Edwin S.H. Leong Centre for Healthy Children (Leong Centre) was launched in 2020 by the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and The Hospital for Sick Children to bring together scholars from across the University and fund work to address inequities in child health in Canada.
