Low-dose daily folic acid (400 μg) supplementation does not affect regulation of folate transporters
Publications
In a 16-week, open labeled, randomized control trial by Dr. Deborah O' Connor and colleagues adults consumed a low folic acid-containing diet, a folate-free multivitamin, and either a 400 μg folic acid supplement or no folic acid supplement. Dietary intakes, blood work and Messenger RNA (mRNA) expression and protein expression of FT/R and GCPII in the intestine were assessed at baseline, 8 week and 16 weeks. The study showed that folate transporters are present throughout the terminal ileum and colon; there is little evidence that a low dose of folic acid supplementation affects colonic absorption. It was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition on 28 December 2023.
