Shama and Asbury et al. demonstrate that, despite clinical interventions that perturb microbiomes, mother’s milk microbes and their dose are associated with gut microbial development in verylow-birth-weight (VLBW) infants. This highlights the potential for mother’s milk microbes to colonize the VLBW infant gut, especially with direct breastfeeding and limited antibiotics.
