U of T Research Highlights Keys to Successful National School Food Program

Canada’s $1 billion National School Food Program, launched in 2024, aims to provide nutritious meals to an additional 400,000 students. Researchers from the University of Toronto’s Joannah & Brian Lawson Centre for Child Nutrition studied school food programs in Ontario to identify factors that support success.

Registered dietitians Nicole Weber and Nina Trask found that these programs reduce hunger, foster inclusive school communities, improve student focus and behaviour, and offer valuable skill-building opportunities.

Challenges include reliance on volunteers, rising food costs, and limited infrastructure, which can hinder program consistency. Coordinators stressed that dedicated staff, stable funding, and professional guidance are critical to maintaining nutritional quality and sustainability.

The study highlights that a coordinated national approach, community buy-in, and adequate resources are essential to maximize benefits for students’ health, well-being, and learning outcomes.
